Digital camcorders have become very popular over the last few years and now there are a number of different makes and models on the market. When comparing Canon HF M30 and Canon HF M31 Camcorders you will notice that there are many similarities between the two but a few important differences as well.

They both come from the Vixia range, are both classed as dual flash memory camcorders and they bear a number of other similarities. They both have a SD memory card slot and have the same compact and lightweight body.

You can be assured of high definition video as both models have a 3.9 mega-pixel full HD CMOS image sensor and a Canon 15x HD video lens. You also have the option to take 3.3 mega-pixel photographs.

These camcorders actually help you to get the best quality recording that you can. It has a ‘Smart Auto’ option which analyzes the conditions that you are recording in and then chooses the best options to achieve the best quality. There is also a ‘Touch and Track’ option that helps you to achieve a sharp and precise picture by eliminating any fuzzy lines.

You control your settings via the 2.7 inch LCD touch screen monitor. All your options are displayed here as well as being able to view what you have recorded. Each comes with 5.1 Channel Surround Sound built in meaning that you are guaranteed sound quality to make your picture quality.

The only noticeable difference between the two models is the size of the internal flash drive. The M30 has an 8GB one and the M31 has a 32GB one. This means that the M30 can save up to three hours on the internal drive whereas the M31 can save up to twelve hours which is a lot more.

The length of time you can record depends entirely on the quality of the video. The better the quality the less recording time you will have. For example if you are recording in HD which is the highest quality then you could only expect to have 40-60 minutes of recording time with the M30. However the M31 would still give you 3-4 hours. You need not worry about this though as both models allow you to insert an SD memory card for further recording.

SD cards are available to buy in various sizes with the largest being 64GB. Therefore you can make sure that you are never in the situation where you run out of space. They also have a feature that detects when the internal memory is full and switches recording to your SD card. You can bypass this though and choose to record straight onto your memory card.

With the M31 having a larger internal flash drive you do have to pay more for this model. It comes in at eight hundred USD which is around one hundred dollars dearer than the M30 which is seven hundred USD. You would need to weigh up whether having the extra space is worth the extra money.
