Morning dress was so called because gentlemen used to go riding in the mornings. When they rode they wore a special tail coat, which had been cut away at the front to allow them to sit on their horse without creasing their coat. When they returned home after their ride, they changed out of this special coat, which meant that they only wore this outfit in the mornings, hence the name. Gradually morning wear became more acceptable for wear later in the day.
