When buying a dining room table, you might think it’s as simple as finding a style you like. But, there are many things to consider. For instance, how large of an area you have to accommodate your new table. Also think whether this table will rigidly be for eating on. If you plan to use your new table for other things, such as arts and crafts with your children, then the material it is made of is certainly something to consider.
Dining tables come in many different shapes and sizes. If you are looking for a table to simply eat dinner at with your family, then a round or square table should be fine. But, if you need something that you’ll be able to use for entertaining guests, then an oval or square table would probably be better. Remember, you can usually purchase a table that naturally sits four to six, but can accommodate more with a leaf insert. This normally adds around 18 inches to your table, and at least two more seats. When it comes to the shape of your table, it normally depends on where you are going to put it. If it will be centred in a room then a circular or oval table is fine. But, if it will be up against a wall most of the time, a circular or oval table is not really very space efficient. Once you decide where your dining table will be located, you can decide the shape from there.
The next decision when choosing your dining table, is what material it will be made out of. Recently, glass top tables have been a large hit. But, if you have children, a glass top table, might not be a great choice. If your children will be using the table for much more than only eating, you will soon find out that hand prints are your worst enemy! If you plan on using glass cleaner on your table top every day, then it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. But, if you’re like me and you just brush off the crumbs after dinner, then a glass top probably isn’t for you. Also, think about how the glass is attached. Unless you get one where the glass is fitted into another structure, then most likely it either stays in place with suction cups or small rubber pieces. Although the glass is naturally very heavy, if you have children continually leaning on the edge of the table, or reaching across the table and putting weight on the edge, then the glass can and will ultimately slip out of place. Wood tables are usually an option. In fact, you can choose wooden in nearly any colour to match your decor. Wood is known to be very sturdy, and is a favourite with parents everywhere. While, it is not as easy to wipe clean with glass cleaner, it can and will withstand crayon, marker, and actually the occasional action figures fighting karate style on it. The plus is that you can find a wood table to match with just about any decorative style. The final choice is marble and granite. These tend to be very pricey compared to glass and wood. If your style is much more traditional, then this may be the perfect match. Granite and marble top tables can be a hassle when you have younger children at home. You must be sure to clean up spills immediately, and usually use a coaster under drinks. You also cannot use just any household cleaners on granite and marble. This might be as well high maintenance for someone with a busy lifestyle.
While everyone has their own taste and style when it comes to home decorating, the ease of use in your home should be the most important factor when deciding which dining table to purchase. Choose something that simplifies your life, not something that makes much more work for you at the end of the day.
