The practice of using natural essential oils has been around longer than its name, aromatherapy. Natural essential oils were even used for healing back in the Stone Age. A French cave shows an illustration of the people using natural essential oils.
Even the Egyptians used essential oils. They are most popular for their mummies, which they used essential oils on to preserve their dead. They also used the oils in their rituals and medicines. Pharaohs of Egypt used essential oils to trade with for things like slaves and treasures.
Romans used essential oils in political and temple buildings for peace and tranquility. They often put lavender in their public bathes as well. They also used essential oil for massages after bathing.
The Chinese use essential oils as well. They used the oils primarily for healing illnesses. “Yellow Emperor’s Private Manual” was the first medical book in China. This book listed the effects of each essential oil.
In 1897 the applications of essential oils became more effective. Various concoctions of essential oils and extracts were experimented together by a French pharmacist. The newly invented burner head and oil concoctions invented diffusing oils. This made the application of essential oils more effective.
In 1928 the French botanist Rene-Maurine Gatteforril experimented with several essential oils. He wrote down specific healing capabilities of various essential oils in books. These books also contain how to properly apply the oils to disinfect, sterilize, kill viruses, and reduce inflammation.
It was discovered in 1964, by Doctor Jean Valnet, that essential oils could aid in cell regeneration and sterilization. Doctor Valnet encouraged the use of aromatherapy in the medical field. Eventually before World War II began, essential oils were being used to disinfect and sterilize. Hospitals were also using them to fumigate the buildings and to sterilize surgical and dental tools.
It is hard for some people to use essential oils when there is not a lot of scientific research to back it up. Bel’Air’s chairman, Mr. Huang Shu Li, is using scientific research to validate the healing properties of aromatherapy. Bel’Air has even combined with the National Yang Ming University in Taiwan for the purpose of proving the effectiveness and safety of essential oils.
