In a perfect world nothing will happen to your wedding dress. You have spent a lot of time choosing the wedding dress of your dreams and the last thing you want to stress over is something happening to your dress. This will be a treasure you’ll want to keep together. When it comes to protecting your dress, prevention is key.

When you bring your dress home it needs to be stored in a safe place that will prevent anything from happening before your big day. If you’re going to be keeping the dress for a few weeks before your wedding, you need to keep it out of sunlight and keep it on a padded hanger. It will need to hang free without being touched by any other items even when hung in a closet. You must keep it covered because dust is not your friend. A plastic drape or garment bag is not a good idea because it should have an opportunity to breathe. Your best bet is a white, unbleached cotton sheet.

What is wrong with using a garment bag?

If the smallest bit of moisture gets in there, mildew could set in and make the dress smell musty. Plastic bags put out gasses that may yellow the dress. This will depend on the length of time you store the dress but why take chances.

Another option is to fold the dress carefully wrapped in tissue paper that is acid-free and enclose it in a cardboard box out of harm’s way.

What can I do to prevent stains?

Other than the obvious pitfalls of food and drink at the wedding reception there are other accidents waiting to happen like the flowers and the walk through bubbles if that is part of your wedding. When choosing the menu for your wedding, pick spill friendly foods. Pollen producing flowers could be a disaster as well. Ask the florist to remove any potential problems from the flower.

Wedding day jitters might produce stains. To avoid underarm stains, use a strong antiperspirant. Makeup is another stain-maker so when you put on your dress use a light weight cotton cloth like a pillow case over your head to prevent smearing your dress with your makeup or hairspray. After you put on the dress, do some touch ups, but keep the dress covered. If you are going to be traveling in the dress, you will need to put a towel under you, no matter how clean the car is. Don’t take chances. When the wedding ends, and you change out of your dress, it’s a good idea to wrap the dress in a white sheet and take it to a cleaner that you trust. You should wash your dress before storing it.
